From the text:

Like many other people, world-wide, I have been greatly troubled recently by the growing murderousness of the world and by its most powerful nation—supposedly leader of the free and democratic powers—actively pursuing war-mongering policies, led by a White House clique that ignores public opinion differing from its own unilateralist policies. ... Horrendous civilian casualties in Afghanistan, Iraq and Palestine are also cause for concern. In the circumstances I have been thinking a good deal about warfare in our time, particularly urban warfare and its effects on large-scale civilian populations, and how these issues have been represented in art and, especially, literature. ... Sean O’Casey, in his life as well as in his writings ... has been concerned as much as any other writer ... with this subject matter.
