Then and Now
Nayia, Age 13, Charlotte, NC
We now live in a world full of flowers that bloom,
But way back when, the world was full of doom.
We could not do many things that would help us thrive,
Now we are able to do things beyond their minds.

Then, they had a passion for learning,
Now kids do not even pay attention in class.
We do not realize how much people have suffered for our freedom and education.

I live in a multicultural world,
Where then they could not even associate with different races.
Then, they were not able to speak their minds,
Now we are able to speak up and defend ourselves.

We now live in a world full of flowers that bloom,
But way back when the world was full of doom.

So much has changed over the past forty years,
But inequality still exists.
Even now we have racial problems.
So many people wanted to change that back then and even now.

We could not do many things that would help us thrive,
Now we are able to do things beyond their minds.

Now I want to volunteer, help fundraise for our school,
Then, I would not be able to help my school.
Now I want to speak out and help those being bullied,
Then, I would not be able to say anything.
Everyone deserves to be treated with respect.

I want to make the most of my education to help others,
Then, they didn’t even have the books to learn.
I want to be able to make Martin Luther King’s dream bigger,
Then, his dream seemed like just a dream.
So what if I am just one person?
That was then…
NOW I can and will make a difference in our world.
