Waiting for the Grass to Grow
Avery, Age 12, Doylestown, PA
Will you pause
until the tide has slowed?
Or the sun has disappeared?
My patience has been waning thin
Because you’ve been waiting for the grass to grow
How long have you been gazing down
At those greening leaves
Staring at the swaying stalks
As if whispering to the wind
Are you regretting the past?
Or delaying the future?
Do you dread the concrete path between
Those blades of hungry pasture?
Is it the time that freezes
Those natural shoots and stems?
That makes you stop and ponder
Think about the end?
For all we know this may be true
That time and time again
May be what makes us pause and break
Waiting for the grass to grow
