April Fools' Day
Shivani, Age 7, Albany, GA

I’m Shivani, a seven year old, a first grader at Deerfield Windsor School in Albany, Georgia. This year April Fools’ Day, the 1st of April, came during my spring break. Because it was a holiday, I had slept late, and did not get up till 7 o’clock. Even then, I did not remember it was April Fools’ Day. I came to know when my gran-mom told me it was April Fools’ Day, a day of harmless fun and jokes. Then my aunt called and said Kali, who is my mom’s dog, was getting married, and I said, “I know, I know, Happy April Fools’ Day.”

Then I played an April Fools’ trick on my aunt. I said, “Kali ran away.”

My aunt said, “Again!”

I said, “Yup.”

My aunt said, “Who went after him?”

I said, “No one.”

My aunt said, “What will Mom say?”

Then we were quiet for a while. Then I said, “Happy April Fools’ Day!”

I wanted to play an April Fools’ trick on my gran-mom, so I said, “Kali ate the flowers in the backyard.”

My gran-mom said, “So be it.”

Then I knocked on the door and told my gran-mom somebody was at the front door, but my gran-mom refused to believe me. Then I rang up my gran-dad, knowing that my gran-dad was home from his office. I said Kali dug up the flowers and my gran-dad believed me. I said, “Happy April Fools’ Day.” My gran-dad had forgotten it was April Fools’ Day.

Then I called Mom and I said Gauri, who is my dog, a white and light brown colored dog, ran away and gran-mom had gone after her. Mom said, “What good news!”

I said “Happy April Fools’ Day!”

Mom said, “I’m too tired to laugh!”

“Uncle has opened the fridge and is busy eating the chocolates,” I told gran-mom, and she believed me easily. Then I said, “Happy April Fools’ Day!”

Then my aunt rang up and I played an April Fools’ trick on my aunt again. I said, “Kali has run away,” and my aunt believed me, and I said, “Happy April Fools’ Day!” Then my aunt rang up again and said that the people who had given us my kitten, Sambi, wanted to have Sambi back. I said “I know, I know, Happy April Fools’ Day!”
