Road Trip
Nathan, Age 10, Cairo, MO

I think the road trip was fun, but we’re done now and we are home. Let me start from the beginning. It was just an ordinary day.

Then my dad said, “Get in the car.”

“Where are we going?“ my brother and I asked at the same time. My brother is John.
My mom and dad were already out the door. My little sister closed behind her. Her name is Anna. Anna and John are twins. They are both seven. They always argue about who is older. Anyway, I’m James. I am thirteen.

I left as soon as I could. “Where are we going?” I asked again, feeling annoyed.

“It’s a surprise and just in time for your birthday. You‘ll know when we get there,” Dad said. Well, I had completely forgotten my birthday was in two days. So I knew it was going to be a long trip.

I have wanted a dog since I was three. Last year I forgot it was birthday and my dad got me a dog. I named the dog Jake.

“What are we going to do with Jake?” I asked, but I knew we were going to take him with us.

“We’re taking him with us. Did you pack everything?” Dad said.

“No we don’t have everything. We need to get Jake,” Mom said.

“James, go get Jake,” Dad said. I went and got Jake. Jake only weighs two pounds. He is only seven inches long. He is a black lab. He can run very fast. He loves me.

“I got him.” I said.

“Good,” Dad said.

“Put him in the car, James,” said mom. So I did. Our car was very nice because my dad won the lottery.

“What else do I have to do?” I asked.

“Get your brother and sister,” Dad said. So I picked them up and put them in the car. Of course, they were yelling.

So now I was in the car. I had been in the car for two hours. Then I fell asleep for thirteen hours. When I woke up, we were at the bank. My dad gave me a check for one hundred dollars. I wanted to spend it so badly on a new bike.

“Don’t spend it right away,” Dad said.

“I won’t,” I said. I don’t think I meant it. All the people in the car played I Spy. I am the best at that. We then rented a room in the Best Western Hotel. I woke up at nine o’clock. I woke up in our car; no one was talking. Two hours later I was in Florida.

“Dad, when can we get out?” I asked.

“I don’t know,” Dad said.

“When will you know?” I asked

“I don’t know!” Dad said.

“Can we play I Spy till we get there?” I asked.

“Why don’t you watch a movie until we get closer?” Dad suggested. So we watched the movie Cars until we arrived at the beach.

We unloaded the car and Jake went running on the beach. My mom and dad unloaded the car while we ran after Jake and played until it was time to eat. We also saw lighting on the beach, so we had to go inside. Then came the discussion of what to eat and where. It turned out we ate at Fortel’s Pizza Den. It was truly the very best pizza. We then had ice cream while my family sang “Happy Birthday.” My mom asked the people from behind the counter to sing to me, and I was very embarrassed. I also received a new DVD player and my own laptop. I bought several games on the laptop and watched seven movies with my brother and sister, while Jake sat beside me and ate the left over pizza. This then gave Jake an upset stomach; the cleaning people at the hotel were not happy about the mess.

We stayed for a month and had fun the entire time. While we were there, we surfed and Jake rode on the front of my board with me. He loves water. We also went to Disney World, but I am not big on roller coasters. I went on the swings and shook hands with Goofy. We ate great food and rode on a boat from the Magic Kingdom to EPCOT. There we visited Germany and they had the best brats. My sister even got lost in Germany using the bathroom, but we found her after two hours. We played a spy game with little cell phones from city to city. We broke the spy code in France.
I am a huge fan of Star Wars and helped stop Darth Vader then received my own light saber at Hollywood Studios. There I also got to go on a simulator of what it would be like to be in an X-Wing star fighter.

On our way home, we ran into a tornado. We got out of the way just in time. I peed my pants when I saw the tornado coming. It was a long ride home, and my brother and sister fought most of the way. Jake was a good passenger, and I was so happy to have him with me. Every once in a while, I would take him out of his cage, and he would jump on my lap. He licked my face and I would laugh, but soon my parents would tell me to put him back in the cage to keep him safe.

By the time we got home, it was dark. So dark, I could not see my hand. I got to bed so quickly that I never even realized I was out of the car. Jake was happy at home. I am so glad that Dad fixed the fence so he has a safe place to be. With my hundred dollars, I bought a dog house for Jake and a ten pound bag of dog food.
