Rushing down the hall once again, this time going to math class, Brittney almost bumped into someone. “Hmm, I guess it’s Matthew this time.” She decided to stay behind him and wait until he was inside the room before entering, because Matthew meant trouble. To her surprise, he didn't go in right away, so she stayed around the corner.

“Hey, Matt,” said Galen’s voice.

“Hi, G.”

Matthew said, “My mom said it’s all good for you to come over tomorrow.”

“Great! I’ll be there”

“Alright, see ya.”

She let her breath out. She knew they were inside, so it would be safe for her to go in now. Math was never a drag for Brittney; she could zip through a test, no problem. Math was over, P.E. was next. She smiled, remembering how she had bumped into Brandon.

“Brittney, are you coming?” asked Tay.

“Oh! Yeah, I’ll meet you in P.E.”

She stopped. Matthew and Galen were outside, again.

“So you’re sure you can help me ace the test?”

“Of course, have I ever had bad grades?”

“Yes.”

“Ok, well, forget those times. You will do fine on the test, I know the answers to every math question.”

“What was that all about?” she contemplated as she walked to P.E. “Are they going to study together? I mean, there is nothing wrong with that. I just have this weird feeling…”

Before she went into the gym, she waited for Brandon until he was just around the corner, “Brandon. Brandon!” she hissed.

“What’s up?”

“I think I found out more about the mystery.”

“Really!? That’s great! What is it?”

“Well, I saw Galen and Matthew outside of math, and they were talking about going to Galen’s house tomorrow. They could just be studying together, but I think that more than just that is going on.”

“Ok, well, is there anything you want me to do? Or what?”

“I want you to introduce yourself to Matthew and Galen, sit at their table or something. Then, ruin their plans by showing up at Galen’s house after school tomorrow. Okay?”

“Got it!”

“Sit at their table tomorrow too.”

“Okay, I will.”

“Oh I hope this works!” she thought to herself.

She sat down at her table just two minutes before lunch. Soon, all the other students came flooding in. Brandon stopped by briefly.

“Hey, Britt?”

“Yeah?”

“Do you think it would be OK for me to come to your house Monday?”

“I’ll have to ask my mom or dad when they get home.”

“Just wondering.” And he walked away.

“So he’s in on the mystery now?”

“Oh! Hey, Crys! Yea, I actually told him before I told you.”

“What?”

“Sorry, it was just convenient to tell him first. Afterwards, I kind of forgot.”

“Oh my goodness! Really?”

“Um… Yeah, you’re not mad?”

“No. So tell me, have you two made any progress?”

“Sort of. I heard Matthew and Galen talking together. Matthew is going to Galen’s house tomorrow, to study or something. Brandon is spying on them to figure out what’s going on, and he’s going to sit at their table.”

“Great! I hope you guys find out more!”

“Thanks.”

Brittney sighed as she took her backpack off and plopped onto the couch. She just wanted sit there and not move until tomorrow, but that was not realistic. She got up and blew a wisp of hair out of her face. Walking into the kitchen, she grabbed a small bag of trail mix and sat down at the table to do homework. She pulled her light brown hair up into a ponytail and got out math. Usually she could whip through any subject. But she was feeling very tired and math looked uninviting. She buried her face in her hands, breathed deeply, and got out her other subjects. She dragged through her homework and looked at math again. She did her best, but something felt off today. She went to the living room, grabbed a blanket, and laid down on the couch. She only planned to stay there for a couple minutes, but her eyes felt heavy, and next thing she knew, she was asleep.

“Hey, Mom!”

“Hi, Brandon.”

“Hi, um, can I go over to Brittney’s house on Monday?”

“No, but she can come over here on Sunday.”

“Thanks, Mom!”

“Do your homework now, okay?”

“Okay.”

He went to his room on the opposite side of the house. He pulled out a piece of paper and wrote down the plan of what he was going to do to spy.

Get close to the suspects.
1a. Sit with them at lunch.
1b. Listen in on their conversation.
1c. Find out where Galen lives.

Ruin their plan.
2a. Show up at Galen’s house.
2b. Find out how they are going to cheat. (if these are the right people)

Report to Brittney.
3a. Tell her their plan.
3b. Find out what she wants me to do next and do it.

He sighed and got out his homework. Just then his mom came in. “Hi, what’s up?” he asked.

“I just wanted to ask you, do you feel weird around certain girls?”

“Nah.” He must have sounded convincing because she didn’t argue.

“Okay.” She slipped out so quietly he didn’t even notice she had gone.
