The Baseball Problem
Graeme. Age 7. Calgary, Alberta

Sally and Joseph were playing baseball. When it was 4-3 for Sally, Joseph hit the ball out of sight. There was a sound. Clank! Clank! Then the alarm went off. Sally whipped around and charged around the house. It looked like she was going to go inside. Finally, at the last window, she saw it. “Joseph, come over here!” she yelled.

He came darting around the corner. Out of breath he said, “Rats.”

Suddenly, Mom’s car came heading up the hill. At least her windows were closed, so she couldn’t hear the alarm. “Oh, no!” said Joseph.

Sally tried to put the shards back in place when Joseph shut off the alarm and answered the phone. Putting the shards back in place didn’t work. “Pass tape!” she called. In about ten seconds, she had taped the shards to the window and taped the cracks. Just as Mom came into the garage, they went upstairs.

“Okay” said Sally “Let’s go play baseball at the field across the street.”

“Now?” asked Joseph.

“Sure!” said Sally. “MOM! WE’RE GOING TO THE FIELD ACROSS THE STREET!”
