Once there was a little girl named Madeline. And every night she'd asked if she could stay home on the first day of school. And every night her parents said, "No." So she cried and cried and cried. So they bought her a toy to see if that would get her to stop crying. But she did not stop crying.

Now there were three days left until school started. In the morning, she said, "Can I stay home on the first day of school?" Everyone said, "No!" All night she cried and cried and again they bought her a toy and again she did not stop crying.

Now there were two days left until school started. Now she was sadder than ever. She said," I need to stay home on the first day of school." But still everyone said, "No!" So she cried and cried and cried but the parents did not want to waste their money on a toy. Luckily her mother knew how to sew. So she sewed a toy dog for her sweetheart.

When the little girl got her toy dog, it was morning. There was only one day left. But she did not notice. The parents were delighted! When it was bedtime, she noticed all right, but she did not cry.

The day she got to school no one played with her. When Madeline came home, she asked if they could move so she could be in a different school district. Her mother thought and thought and thought and she finally made up her mind and said, "Yes!"

The day she moved she was not impressed with her new house. The roof was rusty, the door was falling apart but the thing she was annoyed about most of all was that she had to sleep on the floor.
