April Laughter
Holly, Age 15, Maquapit Lake, NB

"Hey mum, hey dad I'm home," 12 year old Jessica Bennet said as she walked in the front door after school.

"Hello dear, how was school?" asked her father.

"Good. I got this really weird letter in the mail and it's addressed to me from England!" Jessica exclaimed to her father as she set her bookbag down on a kitchen chair.

"Oh yes, we were expecting that." Her father sighed as he took the letter from his daughter.

"Expecting what?" Jessica asked as she watched her father open the letter. There was a very serious expression on his face.

"Dear, it's from an all girls school up in Greendale," her father explained.

"What's that got to do with me?" Jessica asked, getting worried.

"They have accepted you," her father smiled.

"Dad, am I missing something here?" Jessica asked, getting a little annoyed with her father.

"Your mother and I are sending you to an all girls boarding school in England," Mr. Bennet sighed.

"What are you talking about? You guys never told me about this!" Jessica's voice got louder and louder with every word she said.

Mr. Bennet didn't say anything for a few moments, then he spoke up.

"Jessica, what's the date today?"

"The date... don't try to change the subject! I want to know all about this." Jessica was getting very mad.

"Just tell me the date."

"It's April 1st, now tell me about the boarding school."

Jessica stopped dead at the very last word.

"Dad, don't tell me-"

Her father burst out laughing.

"That's not funny dad, that was mean!" Jessica said, starting to laugh herself.

"April Fools!"
