Small Flickers. Small Expectations
Beverly, Age 12, Gilbert, AZ

Do you notice how a flame
Can remain so tranquil,
lighting up the room,
But then all of a sudden,
starts dancing around madly?
Much like human beings.
We can remain perfectly content,
Yet we can also be so esurient,
Asking for more and more.
We're the flames that darken the room.
Darker, and darker as our greediness rises.
Finally, we, the flames, reach our full extent,
And we go out,
Leaving the room pitch black.
If you let your inequity overflow,
Your flame will extinguish.
So be forewarned,
And don't let your rage flare.
Gluttony's partner is anguish.
