Sixteen-year-old Haley is what most of us would call a hypochondriac. She frets about ‘Cat Scratch Fever’, after tripping and falling on her cat; explains that she gets dizzy when she is nervous, then goes on to agonize about a possible brain tumor or blood pressure problem; and, after drinking a cup of coffee (shortly after explaining why she shouldn’t) she feels herself shaking, sweating and palpitating and thinks about how she’ll probably have a heart attack and die. ‘The Healing Time of Hickeys’ is her journal, which she records on her laptop computer and wherein narrates her life almost exactly how it happens; with of course, her slightly biased view.

I thought that The Healing Time of Hickeys was an amusing look at the life of a teenager. It was well written, and by wording the story just so, Karen Rivers turned everyday life matters into humorous quips. Haley’s warped descriptions and views on life are a constant source of amusement throughout the book. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone over thirteen, and rate it at four stars. I thought it was a very good book, but I prefer more adventurous plots.
