Robert Bateman. What comes to mind when you hear that name? I think of rich paintings, full of detail and life. I do not think of children’s books, especially not picture books, but that is exactly what Backyard Birds is. Bursting with lavish prints and detailed notes, this book is an excellent “starter kit” for any young bird lover. From swallows to turkeys, this book is filled with facts and illustrations of over thirty birds.

I think that children between eight and twelve will get the most out of this book. I thought the pictures were beautiful and I liked the fun way that the facts were displayed. The info sections between every few birds were well placed and had interesting topics.

I think this book is worth four stars, because it is not quite something you’d read to children but it’s not just data either. I am sure that whoever decides to open the book will love it for the artwork.
