My first thoughts on finishing this novel were along the lines of “that was awful”. I couldn’t believe the things that author, Catherine Ford had imagined. Then I realized that any book that made me feel that strongly was remarkably written. Throughout the story I felt like screaming at the main character; I wanted to tell her to quit before it was too late, yet I couldn’t stop reading. I wanted to know what happened, could the ending be like I envisioned it? I sincerely hoped not. I was drawn into Nicky’s life, yet I despised her.

The Drowning Pond is an astounding book. I can’t give enough praise for the writing and the plot. As much as the book was sad and cruel, it was spellbinding. I loved the way fact was twisted with fiction and the end came at the beginning. I would not recommend it to anyone younger than fourteen since there is some disturbing imagery, but I definitely think this book is worth five stars.
