‘I decided then and there that if I lived through this experience, and if anyone was in trouble, I wouldn’t wait for the next boat. I would be the one to help.’

Debbie Spring’s The Righteous Smuggler is a powerful account of one Dutch boy’s life during World War II. When the Nazi soldiers endanger Hendrik’s Jewish friends, he is at a loss of what to do. Soon Hendrik figures out a solution to help the Jewish people but in doing so endangers himself. Will brave Hendrik meet a terrible end for his noble deeds?

I thoroughly enjoyed reading The Righteous Smuggler. It draws the reader into the horrors of World War II, yet shows the importance of the good side of humanity. This exceptionally written historical fiction novel is an excellent read for grade six and up. I rate The Righteous Smuggler five stars.
