Going Home
Johanna, Age 15, Baker Lake, NU

My life withers
my song dies within me
and I see it
I see him!

He comes to me
and he asks me a question
"do you want
your pain to end?
do you wish to
come home?
would you like to leave this
place forever?"

as I lay in the emergency room
I see the faces
of my family
they are weeping;
they cry for me,
but they do not
know what pain I'm in
and I chose to die

as I die
die of plague
my heart slows
my eyes drop
my last breath lies ahead
and I fall into
my eternal sleep

I wake to find myself
surrounded by my ancestors
they are smiling
they are laughing
they are happy for me
and they welcome me home.
