“The slide is going to come down. We’ve got to get out of here!”

Jolene feels as though her world is falling apart.  Her adored grandfather is acting foolish, her twin brother is leaving on a trip without her, and it seems all her accomplishments aren’t important.  Questioning how great she really is, Jolene travels with her parents and grandfather to a historical sight to do research for her father’s Museum of Disasters. Once there, Jolene trips through a time crease with her grandfather to the time 1903.  Disguised as a boy, Jolene sees a very different side of life.  Befriending a kindhearted boy, Jolene stays overnight at his house when she cannot find her grandfather.  This turns out to be a problem when Jolene realizes that the Frank Slide is about to come down on top of her.  Will Jolene be able to return to the future before it’s too late?

I enjoyed reading Cathy Beveridge’s Shadows of Disaster.  This is a captivating time-travel novel.  Children from the ages nine to eleven will like reading this adventurous historical novel.  This fascinating story creatively brings the Frank Slide to life and readers won’t want to put it down.

If you enjoy Shadows of Disaster, you may want to check out its sequel, Chaos in Halifax. Jolene, this time accompanied by her brother, travel back in time to the 1917 explosion in Halifax.  Although much the same, this time Jolene must take the role of her grandfather and teach her brother the rules of time travel.

I rate Shadows of Disaster four stars.
