Do people know the precise moment when their lives change? All I know is that, for me, it happened just before my fourteenth birthday.

Finding Sophie is the third in a spectacular series, which includes the two award winning novels Good-bye Marianne and Remember MeFinding Sophie was also nominated for the Red Cedar Awards in 2005.  These books are one of the best groups I have ever seen on the Holocaust.   Through Irene N. Watts’ writing you get a feel for how it might have felt to be in the midst of World War II and then forced to leave the side of beloved friends and family. You also find out through the books that there was some momentary happiness. I found these books top notch.

Sophie Mandel and Marianne Kohn were on the same Kindertransport out of the devastating destruction of Berlin, Germany. Throughout the transport, Marianne took care of Sophie who at the time was seven years old. After they reached their destination they went separate ways with their sponsors.  Sophie went with a Christian family friend whom she called Aunt Em.

Finding Sophie takes place right after Sophie leaves Marianne. For the first few years Sophie thinks about Marianne and what became of her and her family. One day she thinks that she sees Marianne. What will Sophie do?  Will Marianne be happy to see her after over five years apart or will Sophie just be the little girl from the train.

I would highly recommend this book and series to anyone.  Of course we are dealing with the holocaust so you have to be mindful of that. Overall, this was a fantastic book/series. Finding Sophie deserves 5 out of 5 stars!

Finding Sophie, Remember Me, and Good-bye Marianne earn 15 out of 15 stars!
