I took Svenís hand and pulled him past the door, out of their line of fire, and slammed it shut.  I could hear them swear, and then they started to fire through the door.

Carol Matas is an amazing writer who has written many books, particularly about the Holocaust.  She is wonderful at capturing the excitement and emotions within her stories.  Jesper is the mesmerizing sequel to Carol Matas award-winning Lisa.  If you can read Lisa first, I would, but I was unable to do so, but it didnít seem to be a problem.

This action-packed novel is about a boy whose real name is Jesper, but when he joins a Danish resistance team, he is given the code name Kris.  He has learned to do what no one should have to do; he can fire a rifle, kill an enemy, and will destroy anything that assists the enemy.  He is always afraid of dying, but sees too often how innocent fellow countrymen lose their lives.  Accompany Jesper as he reflects on his journey while being in a prison cell after being captured.  Time is ticking away.  Will someone save him before he runs out of time?

Jesper is a moving and terrific book.  I would recommend it to ages 10 and up.  If you enjoy Jesper, check out some of Carol Matasí other novels.

I give five shimmering stars to Carol Matasí Jesper.
