The Eight Symbols
Jacob, Age 10, Lincoln, ME

Once, long ago, there were eight symbols. They never got along because they were all different. Ice was cold. Fire was hot. Rock was hard. Water was drippy. Wind was dry. Lightning was bright, Thunder was loud and Wood was creaky.

One day Ice said, "Why must we fight?" Water agreed. Fire said "We are nothing alike." Rock agreed. Lightning was so mad, he just went up to the sky. So did Thunder. Wind was so mad he disappeared. Wood just stood there.

The symbols still argue today. Fire burns Wood. Rock crushes Ice. Water puts out Fire. Wind whirls and Thunder argues with Lightning. Maybe some day the symbols will get along.
