After being betrayed by her mother, seventeen-year-old Valerie runs away to New York City with nothing left to lose. She meets Lolli and Dave in a coffee shop and befriends them. Claiming they know where a monster lives, she is taken to their home, an abandoned subway station. But when Valerie ‘annoys the bear’, she finds herself running errands for a troll. But not all is as it seems. There is a tension building up within the faeries, and Valerie is stuck right in the middle.

Holly Black lives in Massachusetts with her husband Theo. Valiant is her second novel. Her first book, Tithe: A Modern Faerie Tale, won many awards and has been translated into nine languages. Valiant won the Andre Norton Award, the ALA best book, and is on the Locus recommended reading list.

I would recommend Valiant for everyone ages 14 and up. Even the most reluctant of readers will be intoxicated with Valiant. It has a gripping plotline, and even the slowest of parts are extremely interesting. A fantastic read.

This reviewer gives Valiant: A Modern Tale of Faerie 5 fantastic stars!
