“Don’t be such a Murphy”

It was Fletcher Boole who coined that phrase. Not long after I moved here in the middle of fourth grade.

I was such a clueless little goofball back then that it took me forever to figure out that he was using “Murphy” as an insult.

Robin Murphy was teased, bullied, and laughed at. But that was the least of his problems. When his high school dream girl becomes his new girlfriend, his whole world gets flipped upside down.  From artists, to Harvard, and naked women (four, to be exact), to roses, What my Girlfriend Doesn’t Know is an action-packed romantic comedy that completely encompasses the ups and downs of teenage romance.

Wow! The originality of this book is just - whoa! Not only is it written in a boy’s point of view, but also, the entire book is written in free verse (poem). I’ve never been as interested in a book as I have with this one. I just couldn’t stop reading. Every time I put it down, I’d be thinking about what Robin is gonna do next, how his girlfriend feels, and connecting parts of the story to my own life. The main characters in this book are my age, so I found it very easy to relate to what they were going through. I would recommend this book for ages 13 and up, as there is some mature content.

Other titles by Sonya Sones include: Stop Pretending: What Happened When My Sister Went Crazy; One of Those Hideous Books Where the Mother Dies; and What My Mother Doesn’t Know (which is the first book about Robin Murphy).

I give What My Girlfriend Doesn’t Know 5 shimmering stars. It was an amazing read that got me thinking!
