What do you get when you mix a weary traveler, a selfish woman and an old, rusty four-inch nail?

This Swedish folktale and has been written, rewritten and read many times over. You might recognize versions such as Stone soup, Bone Button Borscht or Cactus Soup. I definitely thought that Nail Soup was a great variation of the original folktale.

The beautiful illustrations by Paul Hess draw you in, while the words delight you. I made the sad mistake to leave this book on the kitchen counter while I went to get my backpack and by the time I got back my entire family of five were fighting to see who would read it next. A perfect read aloud for any family, or perhaps a good book for your class at school. It shows you what can happen with just a nail, a pot and stories to share.

I give Maddern’s creative Nail Soup 4 stars. A beautifully illustrated cunning tale.
