The Sound of Waves
Mary, Age 12, Huntington, IN

The day was awesome.  The sun was shining and a fresh, salty breeze blew in my face. Then clouds started to gather above us. Everything went dark and flashes of lightning shot across the sky. The thunder was crashing.  It sounded like Native American drums.

I was trying desperately to swim back to shore, but the mighty waves held me back. The waves were ferociously pushing me back, like a bully who wanted money. I could hear the waves thrashing against each other, the wind whistling, and the faint sound of the lifeguard saying to everyone, "STAY OUT!"

The foam turned to nothing as it sizzled away like "Pop Rocks" candy.  I finally got back to shore after a tiring fight. Everyone was safe except for one thing, my surfboard.
