Twig stared aghast.  He would have helped if he could.  But there was nothing-absolutely nothing at all-that he could do.  He had never felt so useless in his life.

Suddenly he saw Spelda clutching her neck.  Blood gushed out between her fingers.  She whimpered softly, collapsed, and lay on the ground, twitching horribly.

Then she fell still.

Twig is a woodtroll - or so he thought.  He was dropped off at Spelda’s door when he was first born and has believed that he is her son.  Until now when Spelda breaks the news to him and tells him he must go to see his cousin at the other side of the Deepwooods.  He is warned not to stray from the path and he sets off on his long and adventurous journey ahead.

Beyond the Deepwoods is the first book in the Edge Chronicles: Twig Trilogy, followed by Storm Chaser and Midnight Over Sanctaphrax.  Paul Stewart is a writer of children’s books since 1988, which are illustrated by Chris Riddell.

This book is fast-paced and exciting; it drew me in instantly.  Although the plot was a little bit predictable, I couldn’t wait to see what was hiding around the next corner, and then BAM it hit me, over and over again.  I loved the characters, and the tiny illustrations on the side of the pages were great-they helped me visualize the creepy creatures along the way, although I could see them in my head anyway due to the awesome descriptions.  I am very excited about reading the next two books in the trilogy.  Craving adventure?  Then this is the book for you.

I give Beyond the Deepwoods by Paul Stewart and Chris Riddell five adventurous stars.
