“Let’s get a pet,” said Jack one day.  ‘I promise I’ll look after it.”

“If you like, dear,” replied his mother absentmindedly.  “What pet should we get?”

When Jack decides he wants to get a pet, his mother is not too worried about it.  She thinks Jack will pick a ‘normal’ pet.  Well, apparently ‘normal’ is not in Jack’s vocabulary.  He likes wild exotic pets.  What pet will Jack choose in the end to please both him and his mum?

When I first heard about What Pet to Get?  by Emma Dodd I was expecting a calm, quiet, relaxing picture book to read.  Boy, was I wrong!  The front cover was where I first got caught. Then I opened the book and knew I was wrong. I had to read on!  The endpapers themselves with their different sized fonts made me curious.  As I flipped on I was amazed at the text and over-sized pictures inside. An easy to read story with its big, bright pages and huge animal illustrations.  I would recommend this picture book to children up to 5.  The younger child will enjoy the pictures but an old reader will enjoy both the story and the pictures.

Overall, I give What Pet to Get? by Emma Dodd five stars!
