“When will we be done? When will we get going?

Ain’t the Merrimac complete? Ain’t that Reb boat ready to burst out?”  What we did know, was that the Merrimac was ready, willing, and able to attack the Union blockade in Hampton Roads.  We needed to get there.  Fast.

Tom Carroll is a thirteen-year-old boy who gets work at the ironworks where they are building a Union army boat called the Monitor.  Or Ericsson’s Folly. The story takes place during the Civil War. The main problem is the Rebs have created a sea monster by the name of the Merrimac.  The Monitor is being created to intercept it.

The I WITNESS series is an historical fiction novel based on the Civil War.  I think this book is suitable for ages 10 and up, because the topic of war may not be appropriate for younger children.  Also younger children may not appreciate the historical facts given.  And lastly 9 and under wouldn’t fully comprehend the plot.

I think this book is very good.  I think this because the author has told the story very well, laced with lots of facts, maps and pictures of some of the real-life characters, events and more.

This reviewer gives Iron Thunder 5 adventurous stars.
