The main character in this story, David, wants to learn how to be a better hockey captain for the Raiders. The Raiders is the name of his hockey team in Canada. To help become a better hockey captain, David does a project in school about great Canadian leaders; like Jean Beliveau, who used his skills and competitiveness to captain the Montreal Canadians to five Stanley Cup victories. A brave girl named Marilyn Bell swam across Lake Ontario when nobody thought it could be done. Nancy Greene showed that perseverance paid off in becoming a world-champion skier. David learns about many great Canadian leaders that weren't in sports.

Mike Leonetti is the acclaimed author of Gretzky's Game, My Leafs Sweater, The Greatest Goal, Number Four, Bobby Orr and The Goalie Mask.

This book has lots of detailed pictures by illustrator Greg Banning and is easy to understand. This book also teaches you about great Canadian leaders. What kept me interested in Wendel and The Great One was that it was about hockey, and I like to play hockey. My favorite team is the Vancouver Canucks. I think this book would be suitable for ages 6-9.

I would give Wendel and The Great One a four star rating!
