Once upon a time, a very long time ago, there was an emperor.

He ruled over a beautiful land with contented subjects, and times were good.

Now this emperor was a hard-working man, but he had a hobby. He liked looking at himself in the mirror.

This is Hans Christian Andersen’s The Emperor’s New Clothes with a rather cute twist on the plot. Unlike the original, The Emperor’s Second Hand Clothes is a little more modern and somewhat sillier. For example, this one’s emperor gives his jobs to different people and has a Santa suit. The ending was…definitely unexpected and funny.

I liked this book’s twists on the age-old story.  This was a pretty good redo, with new humour that I liked. I enjoyed this story's emperor who avoided embarrassment by following a "tradition". I think that this emperor learned the same lesson as in the original, but in a different way. Anne Millyard has captured the essence of Andersen's original tale.

I give The Emperor’s Second Hand Clothes three stars and would recommend this read for ages six and up.
