The Evacuee
Victoria, Age 10, Liverpool, England

Mother closed her eyes,
I think tears were coming out,
But I'm not sure.

I'm off on the train this morning,
A new adventure awaits me,
But I'm sure to miss mother,
I won't see her any more.

There are lots of other boy and girls,
Off on the train too,
Every child in London,
Off to the Countryside.

We'll see the farm animals,
And them black and white things,
Cows I think,
Away from London; and on an adventure ride.

"Hitler won't stop us!"
We shout; as the train begins to leave,
"We'll win the war!" We shout loud,
"We will succeed!"
