I stood there, stock still, caught in that gaze, unable to tear myself away. As mesmerized as a mouse who stands helplessly as death swoops down.

Flora is the youngest Fyrdraaca in the family; she is expected to do the chores, look after her constantly drunk father, do schoolwork, and when she turns 14, serve in the army. But Flora doesnít want to be a soldier; she wants to be a ranger, a spy, who goes where no soldier can. When Flora has a chance encounter with their magikal, banished butler, things go spiraling out of control! Can Flora, with the help of her friend Udo, save the day in time?

Flora Segunda was sometimes a struggle to read because of the different words used instead of what we hear every day, yet this book kept me reading from the very first page. Wilce has used her military knowledge, humour and excitement into a page-turning fantasy novel. The book made sense, and the series of events flowed perfectly into one another, yet she always kept me guessing. The characters and their emotions were excellently portrayed in a way that made it easy to connect to and fun to read about.  There was some mild language.

Ysabeau S. Wilce used to study military history until she came up with Califa, the military city where Flora grows up. Wilce also has a second book, Floraís Dare, and I canít wait to read it!

I give this wonderful book, Flora Segunda, 4 stars and recommend it for ages 12 and up.
