The Missed Tender
Jack, Age 15, Champaign, IL

Why did you have to hurt us so?
What was the cause of your untimely departure?
That left those loved in torture
Wondering, pondering unto where you will go

The seeds of your labor we continue to sow
A bur oak stands out in the pasture
A steady reminder of your rough stature
And as a place of sorrow and grief here below.

We honor your memory by planting tinder
A stone stands in your remembrance
Upon it bears a leaf’s resemblance
To symbolize how none could hinder

Your dedication to keeping forests from cinder
And the love you had for nature’s balance.
