On a soggy stretch he came upon something dark in the middle of the trail, something that hadn’t been there earlier in the morning. Twilly dropped to the ground and put his face closer in order to be sure. Eagerly he studied the fresh find. He poked it with a twig. He turned it over with a leaf. He even sniffed it. There was no doubt: panther poop!

After Mrs. Starch, the most dreaded biology teacher at the Truman school disappears on a field trip to the Black Vine Swamp and says she is out on a “family emergency”; Nick and Marta don’t buy it. No, they figure something is going on in the swamp. They think Duane Scrod Jr., class delinquent, has something to do with it. He does! But the question is what?

This was a very good book. It has laughter and sadness, lots of mysteries, and many different characters, good bad, and just fine, in their own view at least. This book also has an environmental side and you can learn some cool facts about Florida’s wilderness

Carl Hiaasen is a well-known author born, raised, and currently residing in Florida. He has written many novels for adults, as well as 2 other novels for children, Hoot and Flush. Scat is his third novel for young readers.

I give Scat 4 stars and recommend it for ages 9 and up.
