This is a story about 11-year-old Vincent Shadow, an unusual boy who wants to show his family and the kids at school that he has potential. His hobby is toy inventing, but his inventions could use a little work.  Vincent’s family is made up of his father, six step sisters, and Vibs, his evil stepmother who is mean to him.  He does have the support of one sister Stella and the fond memories of his deceased mother.

The story takes place in present day New York and Minneapolis.

The Unusual Mind of Vincent Shadow was a very charming book to read and it makes you think a lot when you’re reading. For example it showed the creativity required in order to invent things. I would have liked it if the book had been a little longer. I particularly liked the drawings of the inventions at the back of the book.  Tim Kehoe, the author and illustrator of the book is a toy inventor himself and this is his first book.  Kehoe is known for creating the world’s first colored bubbles. The age group for this book would be 8-11 year olds.

Emma gives The Unusual Mind of Vincent Shadow 4 stars out of 5 as everything wrapped up a little too quickly for her liking.
