Gracie backed away, her heart pounding.  Should she make a dash for it now?  Should she run out of the door …  She knew she didn’t have much chance of getting away.  Foyce had long legs and could run like the wind.

Gracie, Lady Lamorna, Prince Marcus, Gubble, Foyce and many more are all part of this rewarding story.  It seems in this book everyone is rewarded for his or her actions.  Lady Lamorna starts out needing gold that will pay for her stunning dress she wants so dearly. She will stop at nothing to get what she wants. When Gracie meets Marlon the bat, her life takes some unexpected turns and ends up the hero. Prince Marcus hates almost everything to do with royalty.  So when he rides out with Glee the pony, he witnesses something that he was supposed to be part of.

The story takes place in the magical Five Kingdoms. I liked the appealing characters and unpredictable plotline.  All of the characters’ stories wind together to make a very interesting read.  Only fault I have with this novel is there were a few passages I found difficult to follow.  You will want to read this book and series if you like wizardology and unforgettable stories.

I give The Robe of Skulls 4 out of 5 stars. Vivian French’s next book in the Tales from the Five Kingdoms is called The Bag of Bones and I look forward to reading it as well.  Her third book, The Heart of Glass, should be out soon. This series would be good for ages 8 and up.
