Shelley looked over his shoulder. Kyle was looking at a dead fly. The magnifying glass made it look huge.

“Oh, yuck! Gross!” Shelley gagged.

“It’s not gross,” said Kyle. “Flies are cool.”

Shelley made a face. “I’d rather look at something else,” she said.

“I know,” said Kyle, “let’s look at your fossil rock.”

Shelley and her parents are heading out on a trip to see her aunt and uncle, and her cousin, Kyle. Shelley and Kyle have a special club: The Fossil Hunters Club. Every time Shelley comes to visit, they go and collect fossils down at fossil beach. This year is going to be different. Kyle’s friend Marcus is going to be staying at the cottage with them! Shelley does not really like Marcus, and Marcus definitely does not like her. When Shelley’s special fossil goes missing, all of the evidence points to Marcus. When Marcus says he did not take it, Shelley does not believe him. Can Marcus prove himself innocent, and make a new friend?

I thought that The Fossil Hunters was a very cute book for both boys and girls. The lesson in the story is good for lots of kids, especially in grades 2 through 4. The plot was interesting enough to hold a younger reader’s interest, and not too complicated. The characters were realistic and fun, and the story seemed perfect for its young audience. I like descriptive writing, so it would have been nice if there had been a little bit more description, but it was still a great read.

Marilyn Helmer is the author of many children’s books. This is the second book in the series Orca Echoes. The Fossil Hunters is a great book for the younger or new reader.

I give The Fossil Hunters four petrified stars.
