That Spell Autumn
Mia, Age 14, Merritt Island, FL

                      Cinnabar leaves flatter the chambray skies;
smiling up and down at the same time.
Poppy heads bob to their reflection
in the water flowing a backwards climb.

Scampering along with whispering feet
pointed and frozen on glass-like toes
still as they fall--copper, coral, crimson
jagged leaf points extending in rows.

A smile. A laugh. A pattering breeze.
It all spells autumn to me.
A chill. A coat. A quiet waiting.
Until winter swoops in, blustery.
