Baseball Workouts
Chris, Age 14, Ashburn, VA

Baseball tryouts are coming up so in order for me to make the team, I need to work extremely hard for the next few weeks. For the past couple of days, we have been working out, doing drills to hone our skills. Most of the things I have done to get ready are pitching drills. Coach Griffin, (the pitching coach) had me pitch to another kid for most of the time so I could get my arm warmed up. After I was done with pitching, some other kids and I went to do batting practice off the pitching machine. The part of the time I spent there actually helped me a lot considering that I haven't actually swung a baseball bat since the summer. After the coaches saw us hitting the ball and getting some good reps in, he had us work with our mechanics on the hitting-tee. Instead of having us swing with our full strength, he made us use only our strong arm so we could get the motion down right. This really helped as it improved our swinging motion by a ton. When that was done, it looked like we had it down. We then went to the batting cage again and, surprisingly enough, our hitting actually improved a lot and we were hitting the baseballs better. That day of training was fun; nevertheless, it really helped me improve. Sometimes it helps when my dad is there encouraging me. He helps me to continue to practice what I learned so I can build on it.. He said that when he was a kid, he would beg his dad to go to the batting cage or even to go outside and have a catch with him. I donít actually beg my dad to play baseball with me every day, but I do ask him occasionally (preferably on weekends). Thereís no more training until January and I can't wait to go back!
